Exploring Brainspotting Intensives with Patrice Flanagan-Morris, LCSW

Have you ever had that feeling of “I’ve talked this to death, but I’m still stuck”? Or maybe you are thinking “I’m ready to live my life the way I want it to be”.

Maybe you’ve been circling the same old anxiety for years. Or you keep bumping into that familiar self-doubt—no matter how much you tell yourself you shouldn’t feel this way. Maybe you’re at a crossroads, wanting to grow into a new version of yourself but can’t quite get past what’s holding you back.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know something: It’s not because you’re doing it wrong. It’s because some of the things you’re trying to heal or change aren’t stored in your thinking brain at all. They’re tucked away in the deeper, survival part of your brain—the part that doesn’t respond to logic or “just think positive.”

This is where Brainspotting comes in. And when we give it time and space—like in a 3-hour Brainspotting Intensive—incredible things can shift.

So, What Exactly is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is based on a simple but powerful idea:

👉 Where you look affects how you feel.

When we hold your gaze in a certain spot—what we call a “brainspot”—we’re tapping into the deeper part of your brain that stores old emotions, stuck patterns, and even unprocessed trauma. Think of it as finding the “file” in your brain where this thing has been sitting all these years and finally letting your system process it.

It’s not about talking it all through (though we do a little of that at the beginning). It’s about letting your brain and body do what they naturally know how to do: heal.

I’ve had clients tell me things like:

  • “It felt like I processed three years of therapy in one afternoon.”
  • “I didn’t even realize how heavy that memory was until it let go.”
  • “I finally feel calm in my body when I think about this—it’s wild.”

Why an Intensive Instead of a Regular Session?

Most of our therapy sessions are an hour. We open something up, get into it a little, and then—just as we’re getting somewhere—time’s up.

In a Brainspotting Intensive, you get:

Time to settle in. It takes a little while for your nervous system to relax enough to really dive deep.

The space to follow the thread. You can stay with whatever’s coming up instead of closing it down and reopening it next week.

Big shifts in less time. Many people feel like they cover the ground of months of therapy in a single afternoon because we can move through layers at your brain’s pace—not the clock’s.

What Can We Work on Together?

Here’s the beauty of Brainspotting: if you can feel stuck in it, we can probably work with it.

Some of the things people come in for include:

  • Old trauma or grief that still sneaks up on them
  • Anxiety or stress that feels hardwired
  • Self-doubt, people-pleasing, or perfectionism that won’t let go
  • Feeling “frozen” about a big life decision
  • Wanting to step into something new—confidence, creativity, self-compassion

One client came in because she felt paralyzed about leaving a toxic job. When we followed the tension in her body, it led us to an old belief from childhood: “Speaking up gets you in trouble.” By the end of the session, she felt a quiet, grounded confidence she hadn’t felt in years—and a week later, she gave notice.

Another client came in for anxiety that felt like a constant weight in her chest. During the session, her body started to shake gently (a good sign that the nervous system is releasing). By the end, she described it as “like someone took a backpack of bricks off my shoulders.”

What Does a Session Feel Like?

If you’re picturing something intense or scary, let me reassure you—Brainspotting is actually incredibly gentle.

Here’s what we’ll do in a 3-hour intensive:

  1. We’ll talk for a bit about what’s coming up for you or what you want to focus on.
  2. We’ll find your brainspot. I’ll guide your gaze to the spot where your brain is most activated by what we’re working on.
  3. You’ll tune inward. Most of the time is quiet. You might notice body sensations, emotions, or memories coming up. Sometimes there are tears. Sometimes you feel subtle shifts that grow over time.
  4. We’ll wrap up gently. You’ll have time to integrate and feel grounded before you leave.

It’s not about me “doing” something to you—it’s about me holding the space while your brain does what it’s wired to do: heal and move toward balance.

Is This the Right Time for You?

If you’re feeling stuck, ready for change, or just curious about what might open up if you went deeper, a Brainspotting Intensive might be exactly what you need.

And if you’re not sure? We can talk first. We’ll figure out if this feels like the right fit for where you’re at.
