Navigating Anxiety: Embracing Glimmers of Peace
By Kendra Bittner, LPC
Do you ever feel like everything you do is draining your energy, leaving you exhausted and stuck? It's like running on empty, with no room to recharge. This feeling can be even more intense if you struggle with high anxiety.
As we navigate through this time of year, with the holidays behind us and the chill of winter lingering, it can be challenging to notice the small moments of joy and peace in our lives. These moments, known as "glimmers," are like little sparks of light that can help us find our way through the darkness.
Glimmers are those moments of stillness and calmness that allow us to feel a sense of comfort, even when everything else feels overwhelming. They are more easily noticed when we are in a state of safety and calmness, but they can still be challenging to recognize.
I often encourage my clients to pay attention to these glimmers throughout their day. They are moments that won't take away the challenges you're facing but can coexist with them. Here are some examples of glimmers that I've noticed in my own life recently:
Snuggling with my dog in the morning
Enjoying my first sip of coffee
Feeling the warmth of the sun on my face
Taking a moment to stretch
Going for a walk and connecting with nature
Focusing on my breathing for a few minutes
Appreciating the small comforts, like heated seats in my car
These examples are part of my daily routine, but some days, it's easier to notice them than others. It's important to recognize that we all have days when just getting through the day feels like an accomplishment. By being aware of these glimmers, even on the toughest days, we can find moments of calmness amidst the chaos.
If you're struggling with anxiety and feeling overwhelmed, therapy can be a helpful tool. A therapist can work with you to develop coping strategies and tools to manage your anxiety, allowing you to find more moments of peace and calmness in your life. Remember, you don't have to navigate this journey alone.
